Wheatfield’s Bakery is one of the best places to eat lunch in Lawrence. If the side salad paired with the daily foccacia, empanada, or quiche isn’t your taste, the regular menu features a variety of eclectic sandwiches.
Turkey is paired with cranberry relish on walnut sage bread or swiss and apple on a warm baguette. You can get roast beef, tuna and artichoke, pork loin, or pastrami. For vegetarians, there are 5 sandwiches to choose from, including a tempeh rueben that is great even if you’re not a fan of sauerkraut (seriously, I actually like it). The sweet potato is unusual and quite satisfying, but the simplicity of the grilled cheese makes it my favorite. Though you can choose from 7 different types of cheese, the best combo is provolone, white cheddar, and goat cheese.
For $6.75, I find it is a better deal to get one of these to satisfy my cheesy-bread cravings than to buy the three types of cheese and loaf of bread at the Merc, and this way I’m not eating grilled cheese three nights in a row (which I would most certainly do if I continued to have the ingredients on hand).
